Jersey Retirement Criteria
JERSEY RETIREMENT CRITERIA
I. Purpose: The purpose of retiring a jersey is to recognize extraordinary athletic achievementor contribution as further defined by the criteria listed below.
II. Intent: The intent of creating such criteria is not to eliminate the human element of decision-making but rather to more fairly and justly recognize extraordinary athletic achievement
III. Categories: Candidates for Jersey Retirement may fall under one of three categories.
- Those having accomplished extraordinary athletic achievement during their time as student-athletes at Viterbo University;
- Those having accomplished extraordinary athletic achievement after their time as student-athletes at Viterbo University.
- Those having made an extraordinary contribution to the development, strengthening, and/or growth of Viterbo University athletics.
IV. Criteria
Category A: Candidates must have graduated from Viterbo in good academic standing and meet three of the four following criteria to be given consideration
- Viterbo Success: Candidate must be the school's all-time career leader in at least one major statistical category with a preference of having multiple career records after completion of eligibility in the sport
- Conference Success: Candidate must have been the Conference Player of the Year or First Team All-Conference for a minimum of two years
- National Success: Candidate must have been named First or Second Team All-American
- Professional Opportunity: Candidate must have been drafted or given the opportunity to play professionally.
Category B: Candidates must have played professionally after Viterbo career and must meet the following criteria to be given consideration:
- Rank: Candidate must have reached highest level of professional rank within sport.
- Success/Longevity: Candidate must have had "success" within the league as deemed by the selection committee or candidate must have participated as a professional athlete for a minimum of three years.
Category C: Candidates must have made an "extraordinary contribution" to Viterbo athletics as deemed by the Jersey Retirement Committee
V. Nominations: Upon meeting the criteria outlined in either Category A, B, or C a candidate will be eligible for consideration. The Wall of Fame Committee or Jersey Retirement Sub-Committee will then review the candidate's accomplishments and make a decision as to whether or not the candidate's jersey should be retired.
