V-Hawk Lose Control on Defense

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University baseball split with Maranatha Baptist University on Tuesday afternoon at home. The V-Hawks sit at 12-6 (CCAC 5-1), while the SaberCats reach 2-6.

Viterbo 16, Maranatha 4

The V-Hawks opened game one swinging with a strong first inning with five runs. Carrying the momentum in the bottom of the fourth the V-Hawks would take to home six more times before the SaberCats would attempt a comeback for two runs.

Jake Ouweneel opened on the mound for the V-Hawks for two innings and the win, with a strikeout, no runs and two hits allowed. A series of pitchers in relief for an inning at a time would come in, Adam Olson delivering three strikeouts, Jomar Guzman with two and a single hit before Nolan Hines would close out the game with a strikeout, three hits, and a run.

As the DH at the plate Carson Trumpold would collect three RBIs, Matt Monaghan with a double and an RBI, and Brett Stuessel with a double and RBI combo. Monaghan also strong baserunning for three stolen bases.

Viterbo 0, Maranatha 6

Viterbo holding game two to no runs until the top of the fourth, allowing a homerun, and the top of the sixth where a series of errors would put them down six, completed with Marantha not letting up a single hit.

Starting on the mound Cale Beckman would shoulder the loss with two strikeouts and a single hit over two innings pitched. In relief, Anthony Mangano would throw two strikeouts, allowing four hits and three runs over two errors. Brandon Shepherd would close out the game with two strikeouts and a single hit let up in less than two innings.

Gavin Daniel and Ryder Mortensen would lead on base with a stolen base each.

The V-Hawks return to action Friday, March 21 on the road at Judson.
