SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The V-Hawk baseball team traveled to South Bend over the weekend to compete in another four-game conference series. The V-Hawks went 1-2 on the weekend, with their final game being postponed due to weather. The team got through two innings before postponing the competition. The V-Hawks drop 3-12 overall and 2-5 in conference competitions.
GAME ONE (VU 10, IUSB 8)
The V-Hawks scored first in the first game with Ryder Mortensen and Nathan Faust picking up RBIs, running in Xavier Gilmore and Caden Besemer. Indiana South Bend responded with five runs of their own in the first. The V-Hawks picked up two more runs when Xavier Gilmore ran in both Sean Rooney and Dane Mediger in the second inning. The V-Hawks held off the Titans and scored again in the fourth inning when Ryder Mortensen ran in Armani Camus and Xavier Gilmore. The Titans scored in the fourth yet again, but the V-Hawks responded with two runs in the fifth. Hunter Hess ran in Esteban Sanchez, while Xavier Gilmore brought in Dane Mediger. The final score from the V-Hawks came from Ryder Mortensen running in Xavier Gilmore. The Titans attempted to fight back, scoring in the ninth, but the V-Hawks held them off for the win.
At the plate, the V-Hawks were led by an impressive performance from Xavier Gilmore. Gilmore put up four hits and three RBI in five at bats. Ryder Mortensen added three hits and four RBI in four at bats. Anthony Sanchez started pitching, throwing 120 pitches for 66 strikes. He allowed six runs and six hits. Luke Widerholt pitched the final four innings, allowing just two runs and a hit, throwing 62 pitches and 34 strikes.
GAME TWO (VU 1, IUSB 14)
The V-Hawks struggled in the second game of the series. The Titans were the only scorers in the game through the first six innings, as they took the 14-0 lead. The only run for the V-Hawks came late in the game during the seventh inning when Xavier Gilmore doubled to right field. His double ran in Matt Monaghan for their only score.
From the plate, the V-Hawks were led by Xavier Gilmore. Gilmore put up two hits and an RBI through four at-bat appearances. The only other hit for the V-Hawks came from Cody Lozano. Jomar Guzman started pitched for the V-Hawks, allowing 11 runs and 9 hits through 4.2 innings. Spencer Hautamaki relieved Guzman, allowing three runs and four hits in his 1.1 innings.
GAME THREE (VU 4, IUSB 5)
The V-Hawks scored first in the game. In the first inning, the V-Hawks scored two runs. The first came from a Nathan Faust single that ran in Caden Besemer. The second came on an Esteban Sanchez single that brought in Nathan Faust. The V-Hawks held off the Titans through the second and third, but they scored their first run in the fourth. In the fifth inning, Carson Reinhardt ran in Caden Beseer for another V-Hawk score. In the sixth, the Titans scored two more runs to tie it at 3-3. The V-Hawks earned their final run on a Caden Besemer homer. The Titans earned one more run in the seventh to tie the game, and they scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a single to center field.
Caden Besemer led the V-Hawks in batting, adding three hits and one RBI through five at bat appearances. Nathan Faust also added two hits and one RBI. Brandon Shepherd started pitching for the V-hawks, allowing three runs and four hits through 5.2 innings pitched. Aiden Murphy finished the game, allowing two runs and three hits through 2.2 innings.
The fourth game was postponed due to weather.
