V-Hawks come close on Day Two of Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Arizona -- The V-Hawks returned to the field in Arizona on Monday to face off against Dickinson State and RV Indiana Tech for their next games in the Tucson Invitational. In their first game against Dickinson State, the V-Hawks came up short, falling 12-4 after six innings. In their game against RV Indiana Tech, the V-Hawks played a tough match, coming up just short in the 3-2 finish. With the losses, the V-Hawks drop to 2-10 on the season. 

AGAINST DICKINSON STATE

The V-Hawks fell short to Dickinson State early when they scored a run in the first inning. The V-Hawks quickly responded, going for four runs in the second inning. Ava Anderson tripled for three RBIs, running in Grace Elton, Alexis Watson, and Natalie Martin. The fourth run came from an Elie Klar single to left field. Her hit ran in Ava Anderson. The V-Hawks struggled in the third inning. Dickinson State was able to put together a nine-run inning, putting the V-Hawks down 10-4. Both teams went scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings, and Dickinson State scored the final two runs in the sixth. 

Ava Anderson led the V-Hawks in batting with two hits on two appearances. She picked up three RBIs, and she scored a run. Other hits came from Grace Elton, Alexis Watson, and Natalie Martin. Pitching, Alexis Watson started off, allowing seven runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Mia Weithaus came in to finish the third inning, allowing three runs. Sydnie Newell closed the game with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing just two runs. 

AGAINST RV INDIANA TECH

The V-Hawks' second game of the day was against a team that is receiving votes in the national poll. In the first inning, Indiana Tech scored a run. The V-Hawks didn't respond immediately, and in the second inning, Indiana Tech picked up two more runs on a single that ran in two runners. The V-Hawks were able to hold off Indiana Tech for the remainer of the match, but struggled to score themselves. Their scoring came late in the game in the top of the seventh inning. An Alexis Watson double ran in Makella Jacobs for their first run of the game. An Ava Anderson single ran in Alexis Watson to earn their second run. The V-Hawks came close, but eventually couldn't score the tying run in the seventh. 

Hits for the V-Hawks came from several individuals. Elie Klar, Alyssa Roos, Marissa Carter-Olson, Alexis Watson, and Ava Anderson all picked up one run. Alexis Watson pitched all six innings, allowing three runs. She threw 54 pitches in the six inning competition and faced 29 batters throughout the day.
