V-Hawks split on day three in Tucson

TUCSON, Arizona -- The V-Hawks took a day off from competition, but returned to the field on Wednesday, March 11 to compete in two more competitions. They faced off against Carroll (MT) for a second time in the morning, followed by an afternoon game against Providence (MT). The V-Hawks fell in a closely-contested competition against Carroll 4-3. Against Providence, the V-Hawks showed off with their bats, taking the 17-9 victory in six innings.

AGAINST CARROLL (MT) (L, 4-3)

The V-Hawks were able to hold off any scoring from Carroll for the first three innings of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the first scoring came from Carroll on a two-run home run. The V-Hawks continued to put in the work defensively, holding them off for the rest of the fourth. Though the V-Hawks held them off well, they struggled to score themselves in early innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Carroll scored two more runs, but the V-Hawks responded. In the top of the sixth, Alexis Watson doubled to run in Ava Anderson and Aydenn Sutton for two V-Hawk runs. Their final scoring came also in the top of the sixth on a Courtney Denton sac to run in Alexis Watson. 

From the plate, the V-Hawks were led by Alexis Watson. In three at-bat appearances, Watson had three hits and two RBIs. Other hits came from Ava Anderson, Natalie Martin, Marissa Carter-Olson, and Makayla Nortman. From the mount, Alexis Watson pitched a full game, allowing seven hits and four runs in her performance. She faced 26 batters throughout the game. 

AGAINST PROVIDENCE (MT) (W, 17-9)

The V-Hawks exploded offensively against Providence (MT). The V-Hawks started slow, allowing four runs from Providence in the first innings. The V-Hawks immediately reponded, scoring three of their own in the bottom of the first. RBIs were collected by Natalie Martin and Autumn Meris. A walk with loaded bases also earned a run for the V-Hawks. In the top of the second, the V-Hawks held off Providence, and in the bottom of the second, they collected an impressive six runs. RBIs were earned by Alexis Watson and Autumn Meris. Another walk with loaded bases earned a run for the V-Hawks with Natalie Martin at the plate. Meris' hit was a triple that earned two RBIs. Other scoring in the second inning came on Autumn Meris running into home on a passed ball. The V-Hawks went on to hold off Providence once again in the third inning, and the V-Hawks collected two more runs in the bottom of the third. Elie Klar scored on a passed ball, and Marissa Carter-Olson picked up an RBI on a single that ran in Ava Anderson

Halfway through the game, the V-Hawks were leading 11-4. Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth inning, but Providence returned to scoring in the top of the sixth. In the top of the sixth, Providence was able to earn five runs to cut the V-hawk lead to 11-9. The V-Hawks didn't back down, going on to score six runs in response to Providence in the bottom of the sixth inning. Their first run in the sixth came from Alexis Watson making her way home following a wild pitch. Hailey Hiles was walked, advancing a runner to home for the V-Hawks' second run of the sixth. Elie Klar picked up an RBI, running in Grace Elton. The fourth run came with Hailey Hiles advancing home after an error from Providence. The final scoring of the game came from Natalie Martin. Martin earned 2 RBIs due to a Providence error. She ran in Ava Anderson and Alyssa Roos

From thge plate, Makenzie Woodhouse pitched most of the game, allowing nine hits and nine runs. Sydnie Newell came in to close the game, allowing two hits, but no runs. Woodhouse faced 28 batters, pitching 58 strikes in her performance, Newell faced three batters, pitching five strikes in her performance.
