V-Hawks fall to Dakota Wesleyan, Westcliff
TUCSON, Arizona -- The V-Hawks returned to the field on Thursday for more competitions against Dakota Wesleyan (SD) and Westcliff (CA). Throughout two competitions, the V-Hawks fell to both teams. Against Dakota Wesleyan, the V-Hawks dropped 8-2, and against Westcliff, the V-Hawks dropped 12-6. With the losses, the V-Hawks fall to 3-13 on the season.
AGAINST DAKOTA WESLEYAN (VU 2, DWU 8)
The V-Hawks fell early, allowing two runs in the first ainning from Dakota Wesleyan. Dakota Wesleyan scored once again in the top of the second inning, but the V-Hawks responded quickly. In the bottom of the second, Courtney Denton collected an RBI on a single, running in Marissa Carter-Olson. Autumn Meris also earned an RBI, running in Alexis Watson. Dakota Wesleyan answered again, picking up two more scores in the top of the third. Neither team scored in the fourth or the fifth inning. Dakota Wesleyan scored their final runs in the sixth inning on a three-run homer.
At the plate, the V-Hawks were led by Courtney Denton and Marissa Carter-Olson. Denton picked up three hits and one RBI in three at-bat appearances. Marissa Carter-Olson contributed two hits on three at-bats. Other hits on the game came from Elie Klar and Natalie Martin. From the mound, Mia Weithaus started, pitching two innings and allowing four runs and five hits. Alexis Watson came in to close with five innings pitched, allowing four runs and five hits as well.
AGAINST WESTCLIFF (VU 6, WC 12)
The V-Hawks struggled early against Westcliff, allowing seven runs in the first inning. The V-Hawks held off Westcliff through the second and third innings, but they came back in the fourth, contributing three more runs. The first scoring for the V-Hawks came in the fifth inning. The V-Hawks picked up five runs to close the deficit. Makayla Nortman earned the first RBI, running in Alexis Watson on a double. Another run was scored on an Elie Klar RBI that ran in Makayla Nortman. The third run came with an Ava Anderson single that brought in Grace Elton. The final two runs of the inning were scored from Makella Jacobs. She ran in Ava Anderson and Elie Klar. Westcliff responded with two more runs of their own in the sixth. In the seventh inning, the V-Hawks scored their final run on a Marissa Carter-Olson RBI that ran in Ava Anderson.
Batting, the V-Hawks were led by Ava Anderson, Makayla Nortman, and Grace Elton. All three had two hits and one RBI through three at-bat appearances. Alexis Watson also collected two hits. Other hits came from Elie Klar, Marissa Carter-Olson and Kate Olsen. Mia Weithaus pitched all six innings for the V-Hawks, facing 39 batters. Throughout her performance, she allowed 12 runs and 16 hits on the game.
