V-Hawks breeze past Eagles in home opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The V-Hawk men's basketball team returned to home action yesterday as they took on the Edgewood Eagles. The men's team defeated the Eagles by twenty points and improve to 2-1 on the year. The Eagles will begin their regular season next week. 

Offensively, the V-Hawks were led byt the efforts of Colin Adams. Adams scored 15 points and went 6-11 from the field. Treyton Fletcher was close behind, going 5-7 from the free throw line and 3-7 from the field to pick up 11 points. Defensively, Colin Adams and Treyton Fletcher led the way with eight and seven rebounds, respectivelly. Braden Crubel picked up six rebounds as well. Carson Koepnick led the way with assists, and Jonah Ogunsanya and Landon Thousand each picked up two steals as well. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The V-Hawks went up early over the Eagles with Treyton Fletcher bringing the V-Hawks up 7-2. The Eagles fought back to a tie, but two made free throws from Carson Koepnick brought the lead back to the V-Hawks. At 9-9, the V-Hawks scored eight unanswered points, with five of them coming from Colin Adams, capped off by a Landon Thousand three pointer. The V-Hawks continued to expand on their lead, going up 11 on a Jonah Ogunsanya layup. The V-Hawks went into the half with a 33-25 lead. 
  • Out of the half, the Eagles cut the lead down to four points. Braden Crubel responded with a made three pointer followed by two more points from Jacob Watson and another three from Jack Hennessy to expand the lead to 12 points once again. The next scoring came from Treyton Fletcher's two made free throws, but the Eagles worked their way back within six points. After some back and forth, the V-Hawks pulled away with a 13-0 run to finish the game. Jonah Ogunsanya scored the final two free throws and points of the game. The V-Hawks won 67-47.

The V-Hawks will travel to Northwestern this weekend. They play at 4pm on Saturday, November 8th.
