V-Hawks come up short on the road

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The V-Hawks traveled to Des Moines on Tuesday to face off against the Vikings of Grand View. The Vikings are receiving votes in the top-25 poll, however they are not ranked. Through four quarters, the V-Hawks fell to the Vikings 83-52 and fall to 0-2 so far this year. The Vikings improve to 2-0 with their win over the V-Hawks. 

The V-Hawks were led offensively by Carly Drew's 14 points. After Drew, Nora Tucker brings up seven points. Defensively, Cece Davis led the way with seven rebounds in her performance against the Vikings. Lauryn Goettl, Taylor Jacobson, and Vanessa Wright each added six rebounds as well. 

Though the V-Hawks lost, they out-shot the Vikings from the three, going 8-27 for a 29.6 shot percentage. The Vikings went 7-24 and put up a 29.2 shot percentage. The V-Hawks got beat from the field, shooting 21-62 or 33.9% while the Vikings went 32-66 or 48.5% from the field. 

In the first quarter, Pearla Teko-Folly scored the first points for the V-Hawks on a layup, followed by Marley Hughes. The V-Hawks remained close with the Vikings, down two points halfway through the quarter. With 2:50 left in the quarter, the V-Hawks were tied with the Vikings at 16. The Vikings closed the quarter on a 9-0 run. 

Grand View continued their run into the second quarter, opening with an 11-0 run, scoring 20 unanswered points between the two quarters. A made three pointer jump shot by Carly Drew was the first scoring the V-Hawks did in the second quarter. Five more points from Nora Tucker in the quarter brought an attempt to fight back, but the V-Hawks went into halftime down 50-26. 

Out of the half, Pearla Teko-Folly earned the first points for the V-Hawks on a layup. The V-Hawks continued to fight with eight points from Carly Drew, but with 3 minutes left in the quarter, the V-Hawks didn't score again until the fourth. Grand View scored another 15 unanswered points on the V-Hawks. 

In the fourth quarter, Chloe Auth cut the run from the Vikings on a three pointer two minutes into the quarter. After three minutes without scoring from either team, the V-Hawks earned a three pointer from Vanessa Wright. Another score from Vanessa Wright brought more points for the V-Hawks, and a three pointer from Genna Gretzlock broke the 50 point barrier. Ashlee Williamson scored the final points of the night for the V-Hawks, and the V-Hawks outscored the Vikings 13-12 in the fourth.

The V-Hawks will travel to Indiana to compete in the St. Francis (Ind.) Tournament. On Friday, they will compete against Saint Francis at 7pm, and on Saturday, they will face off against Goshen at 11am.
