V-Hawks Soar to Victory in Home Opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The V-Hawks took down the College of Saint Mary Flames on Thursday afternoon for their first match of the year. In a closely contested battle, the V-Hawks pulled ahead to outscore the Flames 4-3. In their victory, four different V-Hawks scored goals, showing off a well-rounded team. 

In today's victory, the V-Hawks took 22 shots with 13 of them landing on goal. On the defensive side, Madison Zilm put up three saves and Erin Brooks contributed two saves. 

The game opened with an early shot on goal by freshman Paxten Bristol just 3 minutes into the match. The first goal of the game came from Alex Little at 22:40, the third of the senior's career. 

Just 12 minutes later, senior Kelcie Karweick set up for a corner kick from far corner. Karweick sent the ball up, assisting Ellie Hedges to a header goal at 34:07. Hedges' goal marks the third in the junior's career. 

The V-Hawks continued their momentum when freshman Brynlee Kelly got a hold of the ball. She ran it deep into the corner before cutting it across to freshman Paxten Bristol at 36:59. Bristol's goal was the first of her career for the freshman. 

At the half, Viterbo held a 3-0 lead, but the College of Saint Mary answered with a goal at 58:15 followed by another goal at 61:27. 

The V-Hawks held a 3-2 lead with 28 minutes left to play. Just minutes later, freshman Evelyn Shaw got the ball at midfield and ran it up the sideline before passing it over to freshman Brynlee Kelly for a goal off the post at 63:53. Kelly's goal was the first of her career. 

The V-Hawks kept the two score lead for several minutes until the Flames responded with a goal of their own at 80:22, however, Viterbo held on until the end, outscoring the Flames 4-3.

The V-Hawks will return to the field on Saturday, August 23 to compete against St. Thomas at 4 PM at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletics Complex.
