V-Hawks pick up two CCAC road wins

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The V-Hawks traveled to both Saint Xavier and Governors State this past weekend to face off in two more CCAC competitions. At the conclusion of the weekend, the V-Hawks came home with two more CCAC wins, improving their record to 17-5 overall and 11-0 in conference play. 

On Friday against Saint Xavier, the V-Hawks defeated the Cougars 3-1 in a closely contested match. Sadie Treptow led the way in kills for the V-Hawks with 12. Defensively, Jada Mitchell held down the front court with eight blocks while Resse Germann put up 26 digs for the back court defense. Maddie Connor added 23 assists. 

On Saturday, the V-Hawks played against Governors State in a nail-biter. The match went to five sets, and the V-Hawks narrowly escaped with a 16-14 fifth set victory. The V-Hawks were led by Jada Mitchell's impressive 17 kills on a 0.351 percentage. Mitchell also led with six blocks. Resse Germann had an impressive six service aces and 27 digs to assist the team defensively. Maddie Connor led the way in aces with 27. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Saint Xavier)

  • The V-Hawks opened their scoring with a kill by Jada Mitchell, a kill by Izzy Jahr, and a block by Sadie Treptow to set the tone. The V-Hawks stayed close with the Cougars through much of the set until they got a 6-0 run to take the 18-14 lead. The Cougars fought back late in the match, but a block by Sadie Treptow and Jada Mitchell sealed the 27-25 first set victory
  • The second set opened on a kill by Jada Mitchell. The V-Hawks capitalized off of several Cougar errors early on in the set. Later in the set, the cougars took the 20-18 lead. The V-Hawks fought back with a block by Jada Mitchell, but the Cougars ultimately won set two 25-21. 
  • The V-Hawks fell behind early in the third set 11-7,  but they responded with an 8-0 run. The run was marked by kills from Jada Mitchell, Hailee Halverson, and Sadie Treptow to take the 14-11 lead. The V-Hawks continued to extend their lead with a kill by MaKena Ihle and an ace from Casey Frankland. The V-Hawks won set three on a kill by Jada Mitchell 25-18. 
  • In set four, the V-Hawks jumped out to an early start with an ace from Maddie Connor and a kill by Izzy Jahr. The V-Hawks went up 12-6 early in the fourth set. Late in the set, a kill by Jalen Hinzman and an ace from Grace Check continued to extend the lead. The V-Hawks won on an error from the Cougars 25-13. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Governors State)

  • The V-Hawks started strong, earning the first point of the match off a kill from Jada Mitchell. The V-Hawks went up early in the set 10-7 with back-to-back kills from MaKena Ihle. The V-Hawks held the lead up to 17-13 with a Jaden Polovina ace. Governors State tied the match at 17-17. The V-Hawks fought back, holding the lead up until Governors State took it late in the set. The V-Hawks fell 25-23 in set one. 
  • In set two, the V-Hawks exploded to a 10-3 start with kills from Izzy Jahr, Sadie Treptow, and Jada Mitchell. The V-Hawks extended their lead late in the set with an ace from Resse Germann and two more kills for the team. The V-Hawks held a 20-11 lead. Governors State attempted to fight back, but the V-Hawks continued to push with a kill from MaKena Ihle sealing the set victory 25-20. 
  • The V-Hawks earned the first three points of the third set with kills from Hailee Halverson and Jada Mitchell. The V-Hawks took an early 9-8 lead, but Governors State responded with a 5-1 run. The V-Hawks then went on a 6-1 run of their own to take the 18-16 lead. A kill by MaKena Ihle, an ace by Maddie Connor, and another kill from Jada Mitchell finished the third set with a 25-22 Viterbo victory. 
  • The V-Hawks went down early in the fourth set before responding with a 9-1 run. During the run, Izzy Jahr had four kills in a row, and Resse Germann added a service ace. Governors State was able to push back on the V-Hawks, but Viterbo still held the lead at 20-18. Governors State took the lead at 25-24 and won the fourth set 26-24. 
  • In a decisive fifth set, the V-Hawks took an early lead at 6-5. A kill by Izzy Jahr extended the V-Hawks lead. A Hailee Halverson kill brought the V-Hawks to a 9-8 lead. Governors State responded with a 4-0 run to go up 12-9 late in the fifth set. the V-Hawks continued to fight back, and Maddie Connor got an ace to get back within one at 12-11. The V-Hawks fell behind at 14-12, but Sadie Treptow kept the V-Hawks alive with a kill. Resse Germann got the ace to even the game up at 14-14 and she got another ace to finish the match at 16-14.

The V-Hawks will face off against top-10 ranked Northwestern (IA) in La Crosse on Thursday, October 16. First serve is scheduled for 6pm.
