V-Hawks Pick Up Ranked Road Win, Fall in Second Match

ST. LOUIS, Missouri -- The V-Hawks spent day two of the Missouri Baptist Invitatational playing in two ranked matched. In the first game of the day (versus #20 Midland), the V-Hawks picked up a four-set victory. In their afternoon match, Viterbo fell to the #3 ranked Corban (OR) in straight sets. 

Against Midland, Jada Mitchell paved the way with 13 kills, hitting at a 0.522 clip. Mitchell also added six blocks as well. Maddie Connor carried Viterbo in the assists category with 20 in the first game while Resse Germann picked up 18 digs for the V-Hawks. 

In the second match, Izzy Jahr led the team in kills with nine, followed by seven from Jalen Hinzman. Resse Germann topped the charts with 17 digs and Maddie Connor put up 14 assists for the V-Hawks in their loss to Corban. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Midland)

  • The V-Hawks started slow in set one, allowing Midland to go on a 9-0 run early, putting Viterbo down 12-3. The run was cut off by a kill from Jalen Hinzman. Viterbo fought to come back, but Midland took set one 25-16.
  • Viterbo fell behind early in set two as Midland went on a 5-0 run, but responded with a 4-0 run of their own to bring the deficit back to one point. Another 4-0 run with kills by Jada Mitchell and Izzy Jahr brought the score to a 15-15 tie in the mid-match. A late 3-0 run by the V-Hawks secured the lead once again, and Viterbo took set two 25-23. 
  • A kill by Jada Mitchell opened the third set followed by an early 4-0 run by the V-Hawks marked by an ace from Mia Quist. Midland attempted to make a comeback in the mid-match, but Viterbo responded with a 5-0 run with Resse Germann behind the service line. The V-Hawks held on to the lead and took set three 25-21. 
  • Hailee Halverson began set four for the V-Hawks with a kill assisted by Maddie Connor. A block by Sadie Treptow and Jada Mitchell brought point two shortly after. Through some back and forth, the V-Hawks held their lead throughout the set. A 5-0 run by Viterbo in the end of the match secured the victory, winning set four 25-18. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Corban)

  • Viterbo started slow in the first set, falling behind 10-6 early on. The V-Hawks strung together a 4-0 run with an ace from Resse Germann and kills by Izzy Jahr and Jalen Hinzman to close the gap. An ace by Riley Angst gave Viterbo the 19-18 lead, but Corban responded. The V-Hawks fell in set one 25-21. 
  • The V-Hawks fought hard in the beginning of set two, keeping the score close. Corban went on a 5-0 run shortly after, bringing the score to 15-9 in favor of Corban. Viterbo continued fighting with a series of small runs and a kill by Izzy Jahr assisted by Jaden Polovina. Corban pulled ahead and won set two 25-21. 
  • In set three, Sadie Treptow scored the first point for the V-Hawks, but Corban responded with a series of small runs. Viterbo fell behind 16-11 before kills from Sadie Treptow and Izzy Jahr brought the deficit to three points. Corban rattled off a 7-1 scoring run and the V-Hawks fell in set three 25-18.

The V-Hawks will travel to the College of Saint Mary to compete at their Labor Day Classic. On Friday, August 29, they will face off against Saint Francis (Ind.) at 10 AM and #4 Concordia (Neb.) at 4 PM. On Saturday, August 30, the V-Hawks will play against the defending National Champions, #1 Indiana Wesleyan, at 11 AM followed by a 3 PM match against Peru State.
